A 52-year-old RTI activist from Gurgaon has been missing since Thursday morning after he was allegedly kidnapped from Rajeev Chowk.
The activist, Raman Sharma, is a resident of Malibu Towne. He went missing on September 23. An FIR of abduction was registered by police after his wife filed a missing persons complaint, said police.
Sources said Sharma’s wife dropped him at Rajeev Chowk at about 4 am, from where he boarded a bus for Chandigarh.
“Sharma’s wife tried to contact him later in the day, but found that he had left his mobile phone at home. When Sharma did not try to contact her even after a day, she lodged a complaint at Sadar police station,” said a police officer.
“During investigation, it was found that a case of extortion (vide FIR No 548/Dt 24 Sep 2015) had been registered against him in Central Faridabad police station. The family had filed a complaint saying he was missing. However, Gurgaon police have registered a case of kidnapping. Sharma left his personal belongings and his mobile phone at home. The circumstances of the case are suspicious at the moment and investigation is underway to trace Sharma,” said Police Commissioner Navdeep Singh Virk.
Sharma had filed several RTI applications against Haryana Urban Development Authority, town & country planning department, Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon and other government agencies.
He also has a history of tiffs with private developers over alleged irregularities in building and zoning norms as prescribed in the Haryana Urban Development (Regulation) Act.
