Chandigarh, Sep 7 (PTI) Haryana Power Generation Corp (HPGCL) today said it has obtained environment clearance for the 1500 MW gas-based power project to be set up in Faridabad district of the state.

Giving details, corporation''s Chairman and Managing Director Sanjeev Kaushal said here today that the Union Ministry of Environment & Forests has approved the terms of reference for preparation of Environment Management Plan (EMP) and Environment Impact Assessment Report for the gas-based project.

He added that this approval is a major mile stone towards obtaining environmental clearance for the project. The work of EIA and EMP study is in progress at the site.

This is the first gas based project being set up by HPGCL in Haryana, keeping in view the depleting coal reserves of the Country and the fact that natural gas is an environment friendly fuel with almost negligible emissions and therefore most suitable for National Capital Region (NCR),he said.

Regarding allocation of gas for the project, he said that the Union Power Ministry has recommended an allocation of 2.8 Million Metric Standard Cubic Metres per day (MMSCMD) of gas for one 750 MW unit of the project. The gas is proposed to be sourced from the Krishna-Godavari basin in Andhra Pradesh.

He also informed that the Haryana government is strongly pursuing with the Centre for allocation of 7.5 MMSCMD of gas required for operating the proposed plant at its full capacity of 1500 MW.

Kaushal said that for setting up of the project, HPGCL has already purchased around 91 acres of Panchayat land in villages Mothuka and Arwa of Faridabad during January 2011.The process of purchasing additional 50 acres land is in final stages.

He also informed that the Irrigation Department has already confirmed allocation of about 37 cusecs of water for the project. The project feasibility report has been prepared and the process of preparation of detailed project report is in progress.
