Decks cleared to extend the Metro rail from Badarpur to Faridabad

Bells of Metro rail have started ringing in Faridabad. The agencies associated with making the dream come true have agreed in principle to extend the service to this satellite city of Delhi. Work will start on the Badarpur- Faridabad section after the Commonwealth Games.

Residents of Faridabad had been eagerly waiting for the extension of the Metro rail service to the city for the last more than four years. The state government had asked the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for extension of the Metro line to Faridabad in November 2005. The Haryana government had paid DMRC Rs 75 lakh to pre- pare the DPR. DMRC had submitted the DPR to the state government in early 2006. In November 2005, a team of DMRC officials visited the city for the Metro rail project from Badarpur to Ballabgarh. Senior officials of the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) accompanied the DMRC team, headed by its Chief Engineer (Planning), to conduct the survey in Faridabad. Keeping in view the topography of the city and its density of population, the DMRC officials were of the view that the Metro line needs to be laid along the national highway. The Delhi-Mathura Road divides the city into two parts.

After several hiccups, representatives of the Union Urban Development Ministry, DMRC, Delhi Government and Haryana Government agreed in principle at a recently held meeting to the extension of the Metro rail service to Faridabad. (The Metro line from Central Secretariat to Badarpur will be made operational by September.)

Without divulging much on the issue, HUDA Administrator D.Suresh said that positive developments took place at the meeting held in New Delhi. He said it would be a bit early to confirm the extension of the Metro rail service to Faridabad, as concurrence has to come from the empowered committee of Ministers and the cabinet committee on the issue. However, things are moving in the right direction and it is very positive for Faridabad, said Suresh.

It has been proposed to lay the Metro line on the central verge of the Delhi-Mathura Road. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 1,571 crore. While the Haryana government will bear 80 per cent of the cost, the balance will be funded by the Centre.
Various industries' associations in the city have been demanding the extension of the Metro to Faridabad as they feel that better connectivity with Delhi will give impetus to their business. Faridabad Member of Parliament Avtar Bhadana had also raised the issue in the meetings of the National Capital Region Planning Board in the past.

13.8 km Metro line is to be laid from Badarpur border to YMCA Chowk in Faridabad and will have 9 stations Rs 1,571 cr Is the estimated cost of the project 7 acre Land will be provided by Haryana to the DMRC.

It means Metro is still waiting for final approval from Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM). Looks things are moving slowly as this was also the status when member from our group had got RTI reply about 3 months back.

RTI Reply has been received from DMRC. It says:

1. DMRC has not yet received the final approval from Govt. of India and Govt. of Delhi.
2. Work will start as soon as final approval is received and funds are provided.
3. Work will complete in three years from start date of work.
