NEW DELHI: By the end of next year, those travelling from south Delhi to Mayur Vihar will be able to bypass the heavily congested Ring Road. The lieutenant governor on Thursday cleared the extension of the Barapullah elevated road from Sarai Kale Khan to Mayur Vihar Phase-I.
Work on phase III of the project is expected to start in another six months and will extend the existing elevated stretch from INA to the UP Link Road on the eastern bank of the Yamuna. PWD minister Raj Kumar Chauhan said the project was cleared by the LG during the governing body meeting of UTTIPEC and will be sent to the Yamuna standing committee for clearance.
Under the proposal, a bridge will span the river along the pontoon bridge that connected Mayur Vihar with Sarai Kale Khan. The road will have 4 lane carriageways in each direction with a footpath and cycle track on each side.
The 3.5km stretch of the road that will span the river will be constructed on stilts. At the Mayur Vihar end, the elevated road will descend just before the single carriageway flyover at Mayur Vihar Phase-I and will be integrated with the Metro station there.
“This junction will be made grade separated. Traffic from the Barapullah elevated road will disperse in three directions at the grade junction—right towards Noida through a grade separated loop, left towards Akshardham and straight towards Mayur Vihar. The flyover will be made into a two carriageway under this proposal and loops will be made to facilitate movement in all directions,” said PWD officials.
Chauhan said, “With UTTIPEC having cleared it, the project will now go to the Yamuna standing committee. Once it is cleared, we will have detailed designing done and then send it to the DUAC for the third round of clearance. After DUAC passes the proposal, it will be presented before the cabinet. It will take about six months before work on it can commence, depending on how soon the agencies concerned pass the plan. The project is worth Rs 600 crore.”
