GURGAON: As the night falls, darkness descends on the most exclusive address of the city – Golf Course Road – thanks to the lack of streetlights. To top it, the ongoing repair work at many places has made commuting on the road a dangerous exercise.

In the absence of proper lighting, traversing on the stretch from Sector 56 to Bristol Chowk has become a nightmare. “An important road like this has to be well-lit, so that the construction work can be seen. How can the authorities be so callous?” said Ritwik, a commuter, said.

The road is long and wide, with slick building facades, and posh residential and corporate offices hovering all around, but the condition of road itself and lack of lights make it inconvenient for commuters. Though the authorities claim that the repair work has led to power cuts, insufficient streetlight poles on the stretch point to the need to upgrade the lighting on the road.

Deepak Sharma, a commuter, said, “Hardly few lights are working on the entire stretch from Genpect up to Mehrauli Road. During late hours, when the traffic is less, it is impossible to see beyond certain distance, thus forcing commuters to drive slowly,” he added.

“Some repair and road-widening work is under progress on the SPR and Golf Course roads, due to which electric cables got damaged, causing streetlights to become dysfunctional. We have directed concerned officials to address the issue at the earliest,” said a senior HUDA official.

Meanwhile, the commuters have devised short-cuts at several points on the road divider to take U-turns on the Golf Course Road. At several points on the road, commuters, especially two-wheeler drivers, have damaged the barricading to cross the road. “It is dangerous for the commuters because the speed of vehicles on this road is high and it can lead to accidents,” said Ravi Khanna, a resident of Sector 56.
