Jams, lack of crossover facilities irk old city

If one drives down to Gurgaon from Delhi, one can see two distinct landscapes on either side of the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway after crossing the toll plaza at Sirhaul.

While New Gurgaon on the left has swanky highrises and commercial landmarks like DLF Cyber City, Old Gurgaon, including Udyog Vihar, on the right bears a humble look, barring a few corporate offices that came up not so long ago.

The concrete landscapes on either side of the expressway reflect the great divide between two parts of the same city. And the lack of proper crossover facilities on the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway has magnified the divide.

If one is commuting from Delhi, getting to the old city can be a nightmare due to choked exits to service roads and inadequate number of underpasses.

“It seems the expressway was planned in isolation as if it was a green-field project. The authorities should have taken into account how the high-speed road could become a deadly fence between the two cities,” said Aseem Takyar, an Udyog Vihar-based industrialist. “The delivery of several consignments from Delhi is delayed due to congestion on the poorly designed expressway.”

“Only after a dozen persons lost their lives due to lack of crossover facilities did the government construct footover bridges at Atlas Chowk and Shankar Chowk,” said another industrialist from Udyog Vihar.
