In an important development regarding the issue of easing traffic congestion at Hero Honda Chowk, the Haryana Urban Development Authority (Huda) on Wednesday told the Punjab and Haryana High Court that it would deposit its share of money for constructing a foot overbridge there within a week.

Huda has to equally share the proposed cost of the project with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

The proposed overbridge project has been hanging fire for long even as the NHAI had released its share of the money to the executioner of the project, the public works department (PWD), in July.

Hero Honda Chowk is one of the most crucial roadblocks on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway as thousands of pedestrians and cyclists cross the high-speed highway every morning and evening.

Huda made the submission on Wednesday while the court was hearing a writ petition wherein the petitioner had asked for an underpass at Hero Honda Chowk.

The court, according to sources, disposed of the matter saying that it was a technical matter which needed to be looked into by the agencies concerned, namely the NHAI, the PWD, Huda and the Haryana government.

Sources said that the court had also observed that it expected the agencies concerned to complete the project expeditiously.

The five-metre-wide foot overbridge will have enough space for pedestrians and two-wheelers who are presently compelled to cross the dangerous expressway at Hero Honda Chowk braving heavy traffic.

Regulars on the expressway feel that the overbridge needs to be constructed as soon as possible not just to ease the traffic congestion at the junction, but also to help reduce the number of pedestrian fatalities.

A group of local residents met Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Thursday to request expedition of the proposal.

“The matter has been forwarded to a private consultant and they will check the feasibility of a flyover at Hero Honda Chowk,” said a senior NHAI official.
